A family sitcom about a father who takes over parenting duties for his three teenage children after his wife returns to full-time work, only to face the challenges of dating, school, and growing up.

The Story Arc

Paul Hennessy, a sports columnist, takes a more active parenting role with his daughters Bridget and Kerry and his son Rory. The show's direction changed dramatically during its second season when lead actor John Ritter unexpectedly passed away. The series addressed his death directly, showing the family mourning and coping with their loss with the help of grandfather Jim and cousin C.J.

Bridget Hennessy is the eldest child of the Hennessy family. She is portrayed as a popular, fashion-conscious, and somewhat ditzy teenager who is highly interested in boys and dating. Despite her surface-level vanity, Bridget possesses a big heart and shows deep love and loyalty to her family, especially in the wake of her father's sudden death.

Based on the book "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" by W. Bruce Cameron. The show starred John Ritter and Katey Sagal. After John Ritter's death, the show went on brief hiatus and returned with James Garner and David Spade joining the cast to help fill the void.

The show was a ratings success in its first season, drawing over 10 million viewers. While the passing of John Ritter deeply affected the show's tone, it was praised for handling the tragedy with grace and sincerity.
